Weekend at Glenn Street

Another weekend of tearing out means one weekend closer to putting stuff back in. I am oh so happy to see all the flooring is out of everywhere except for the sheet linoleum in both bathrooms.

We found quite an interesting and frightening scene when we took town the old kitchen ceiling.

If you’e unsure of what this is just let me tell you its WRONG! Someone thought it was a good idea to cut a chunk out of the RAFTER in order to put in a can light. NEVER do this! So, the only thing keeping on half of the rafter from collapsing was the sheetrock attached to it, the other half was only attached using nails to the adjoining rafter. Another find while taking down the ceiling was that the vast majority of the rafters are not attached to the roof! No wonder the roof is sagging, that coupled with the fact that at some point they took down a load bearing wall and did not put a beam in the ceiling to support the rafter system means that the roof sagging is only partially due to the rotten floor joist (that’s semi good news). You just never know what you’re going to find when you go behind someone in the house business.

Last traces of the previous owners was also removed this weekend. We have a clean back porch now.

We also opened up what we hope is the nastiest wall in the house. The roof has been leaking for years in this particular spot and it has been the perfect place for a lovely family of Cockroaches to build their dream home. Moisture, rot, and warm insulation. … What more could a Cockroach family want? It was super gross and there was a little screaming involved when they started running toward me and my can of spray.

A little before and after of the flooring getting gone.

Needless to say we were exhausted Sunday evening when we got finished, but we did get it all cleaned up and ready for another weekend of fun. We still have some tearing out and structural repair to go before we can start putting it back together but progress is happening. Also, Roll Tide! Good but scary game to be listening to on Saturday.
