One End to the Other

We did some work this weekend! The deck is GONE, the end wall of the master bath is gone, the shingle debris is gone, what we think is all of the facia rot is gone, and the floor in the hall bath is gone. We even had a little help this weekend, a huge shout out and thank you to Avery for helping with the shingle clean-up!

You know I spent last weekend face to face with a toilet, and I got to do the same this weekend. I only thought that subfloor and bathroom were nasty! Check out the pictures of the hall bath demo. I have never seen a blacker black than what was living under the linoleum floor in the hall bath.

The ugly aftermath of the demo.

I also took out the end wall of the master bath. You can now see from one end wall of the house all the way to the other. The white drywall had to come down for us to install Durock for the tiled shower. Seeing a toilet from the kitchen is every woman’s dream. . .NOT! Durock will be a beautiful sight eventually.

Our wonderful View!

While I was having “fun” in the bathrooms, Brady was rebuilding the corners of the house. While I was inside, he was worked on the low ends of the house, the non-scary sections. Eventually we had to replace the rot on the high corners and I was there to hold the ladder and the cell phone, just in case my spider monkey husband needed it. I am scared and anxious about everything and he is 100% fearless!

This corner was especially bad, and high but he made it work and, in the end, we have a brand-new corner. This corner repair involved blood, sweat, and almost some tears. While he was working a wood shard pierced his thumb and was just hanging there until he could put down the crowbar to pull it out.

The deck and screen porch look a lot different after this weekend. The screen porch is still partially standing (for now) but the deck is no more. It was the poorest constructed deck I have ever seen! The support beams were at most in the ground 12 inches, some were only sunk in 3-4inches and were not concreted in. We were hoping to reuse a few of the 4×4 supports but after seeing how poorly they were installed we decided those need to be new as well. It only took 30 minutes to completely destroy the entire back deck. After falling through, it I was VERY glad to get to take a few swings at taking it down.

We were TIRED by the time we left on Sunday. After all that work destroying the deck we decided to get a little more enjoyment out of it before we ended our weekend.

I wouldn’t roast a marshmallow over it, but it sure burned nice. Goodbye Deck!
